Graduate Students

Graduate students who are U.S. citizens and permanent residents can apply for federal direct loans through the financial aid office, and we assist with certifying private education loan applications. All other funds for graduate students are awarded through their academic department.

Important Information for Graduate Students

Before you apply for financial aid, here are some important things you need to know:

  • To determine financial aid eligibility for Ph.D. students, the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid (OSFA) uses the lower cost of attendance typically paid by students who receive Graduate Research Assistantships (GRAs) or Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs) through their departments. If you will not be receiving an assistantship, please contact our office or your Financial Aid Advisor after receiving your financial aid notice.

  • For master’s students, the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid (OSFA) uses the full cost of tuition and fees when determining financial aid eligibility. If you will receive a Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) or Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA), please contact our office so we can update your financial aid package.

  • To receive federal education loan disbursements, students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours per term that count toward their degree. Loan amounts are prorated for students enrolled in fewer than 12 credit hours.

Financial Aid Application Steps

To be considered for any Federal aid (such as Direct Loans or Federal Work Study) you must complete both of the following applications each year by the posted deadlines.

  1. Georgia Tech Application for Scholarships and Financial Aid (GT App)
Be sure to indicate on your GT App that you want to be considered for loans. If you have difficulty logging onto the GT application, click here.
  2. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
We strongly encourage you to start early by creating an FSA ID now, which is essential to complete the FAFSA. Georgia Tech's Title IV school code is 001569.
