Verification Procedures

Verification is the process established by the Department of Education to check the accuracy of aid applications. If you are selected for verification, you will need to provide the specific documentation requested in BuzzPort based on academic year and your dependency status.

Note: In place of providing the Tax Transcript as indicated below, one option that may be available is the 'IRS Data Retrieval' which allows you to download tax information directly to the FAFSA(link) from the IRS. Tax data will be available through the IRS Data Retrieval option within one to two weeks after electronic submission of taxes to the IRS. Using this option may reduce the amount of documentation that the financial aid office needs to request for students selected for 'Verification'.

If the student's parent(s) has not already used the tool, the parent and the student should go to FAFSA.gov, log in to the student's FAFSA record, select "Make FAFSA Corrections," and navigate to the Financial Information section of the form. From there, follow the instructions to determine if the parent(s) is eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to transfer 2011 IRS income tax information into the student's FAFSA.

The 2012-2013 Verification forms are for the 2012-2013 FAFSAs which cover Fall 2012-Summer 2013.

The 2011-2012 Verification forms are for the 2011-2012 FAFSAs which cover Fall 2011-Summer 2012.

IRS Tax Transcript can be requested by completing Form 4506-T and faxing it to the number provided or by calling 800-908-9946. You may request to have the Tax Transcript mailed to you or directly to our office. Upon receipt of the Tax Transcript, please mail and attach requested supporting documents such as W2s. Once all documents are received, we will make any necessary corrections to your FAFSA. If additional information is required, we will contact you. For Georgia Tech students with OSCAR accounts, real-time information on these requirements is available at oscar.gatech.edu.

Please note: There are significant changes between the 2012-2013 FAFSA and the 2011-2012 FAFSA. Please pay attention to which forms you are using so that you do not fill out the incorrect form for the incorrect year.
