What is Federal Work-Study?

The Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program provides jobs for undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate need for financial assistance. The FWS program gives students an opportunity to earn money to help pay for educational expenses.

How does the FWS Program work?

FWS Employment (75 percent Federal Share – 25 percent Departmental Share) is partially funded by the federal government. To be eligible for Federal Work Study, the student must apply for financial aid during the academic year. FWS students are limited to working a maximum of 20 hours per week during periods of enrollment.

Who can qualify to work?

Funds are awarded based on financial need and are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, until all funds are exhausted. FWS students are expected to adhere to a work schedule agreed upon by both the student and the supervisor. Students are not permitted to work during hours when they are scheduled to be in class, even when a class is canceled or dismissed early.

What are the position types and pay rates?

Positions vary from clerical work to lab assistants to reading, math, and science tutors for elementary school-aged children. Here is a chart to use as a guide to the types of positions available, a brief description of duties, and pay ranges.

When can the student start working?

When the student is hired and has completed all necessary Human Resources paperwork, he or she may begin working. Please refer to the Important Dates to determine the first and last day students may work each semester.

What should all FWS supervisors know?

  • FWS students are allowed employment in only ONE simultaneous job during the academic year.
  • A FWS student CANNOT be employed as a biweekly student worker (100 percent departmental funding), GRA, or GTA, AND as a Federal Work Study worker simultaneously.
  • Students' FWS positions should not interfere with their academic studies.
  • Students are not permitted to take on responsibilities that would interfere with the employment of regular part-time or full-time employees. The position is only to supplement and assist staff in completing daily routine tasks and assignments.
  • FWS students can only be supervised by the supervisor listed on the position request form.
  • If a FWS student stops coming to work, the supervisor should contact the FWS coordinator immediately.
  • A student may not begin working until all Human Resources paperwork is processed.
  • A student must be enrolled in at least six credit hours in order to work unless the student and supervisor have a written agreement with the FWS coordinator for the semester of enrollment.
  • A FWS student's GROSS earnings are calculated against the FWS award amount.
  • A FWS student must be terminated immediately by the department if the student is no longer enrolled.
